“Oddly enough, writing eleven songs about death was no easy task for me; lyrically being graphic or grotesque would have been too easy, and being overly morbid would bring nothing new to the concept. I wrote this just like I have all of the other LB recordings, as a play or a movie. There is a beginning, middle and an end with the lead character taking us on a journey. Death is all around us, lurking, waiting to pounce, striking fear in the living and infecting us in many different ways, I tried to explore some of those ways in the most poetic way that I know how” commented Lizzy.

“Appointment With Death” was produced by L. Borden and J. Scott. It was recorded at the Zanzibar studios in N. Hollywood, CA and was mixed by Eric Rutan (HATE ETERNAL/ex-MORBID ANGEL) at Mana Sound in Florida.

The album includes a plethora of guest performances: George Lynch (DOKKEN/ LYNCH MOB), Dave Meniketti (Y&T), Corey Beaulieu (TRIVIUM), Jonas Hansson (SILVER MOUNTAIN), Eric Rutan (HATE ETERNAL/ex-MORBID ANGEL), Michael T. Ross (ANGEL/HARDLINE), Adam Cameron, Zane, and Marliese Quance. These aren’t simply guest performances, however. Each artist contributed something unique to complete the fatalistic tapestry that is “Appointment With Death”.

The cover art for “Appointment With Death” even has a story. Lizzy worked with special effects wizard Ralis Kahn to design the set based on the themes in “Appointment With Death”. Famed ‘metal’ photographer Alex Solca took over one thousand photos during two days with the band and extras. Lizzy is depicted on the cover as Death himself collecting the souls of three individuals who ended their lives in three very different ways by their own hands. At the end of the shoot the set was burned, sending flames shooting 30 feet into the air! Lizzy explains “Because a lot of music is going straight to iTunes, we thought we would pay special attention to both the cover and the back cover and fill the inside of the CD booklet with tons of fun shots from this specialized photo shoot. As we all know, very soon there will no longer be an actual CD to have a cool booklet for. Everything will go straight from the studio to your iPod, so we thought we would really go all out on this one”.

The new stage show is based on the theme of the album with Lizzy playing the lead character – Death. The set will showcase tracks from “Appointment With Death” as well as Lizzy classics.
Over the past two years, Lesbian Bed Death have become one of the biggest underground acts on the UK’s Goth/Rock scene. Their debut video “Goth Girls Are Easy” was played on Kerrang TV, and has been viewed over quarter of a million times at various places on the internet, including Youtube. Two follow up videos have been shot in the last six months, both of which have been highly viewed. To date, the band has sold more albums than every other artist on their label put together, and LBD fever has continued to grow rapidly with no signs of slowing down.

For a while, it looked like Godless was no more. When the festival started, it was one of the coolest, most fun shows in Staffordshire. The atmosphere was fantastic, and the camararderie amongst bands and fans alike was second to none. We’ve had bands from all over the UK (Cornwall to Aberdeen) come and play, and even a few acts from The Netherlands. We’ve had young local bands play their first ever show at Godless, and more established bands such as Mendeed, Speed Theory and Gutworm play Godless as part of a national tour.

So what went wrong? Our original venue closed down a couple of weeks before Godless 6 and we salvaged the show by moving each stage to seperate venues on the same road. The atmosphere wasn’t there and it just wasn’t right. We struggled to find a new venue, but eventually found one in Hanley. We had to compromise the day, and Godless was held for the first time on a Sunday. The security guards were hostile towards the fans, refusing entry to kids wearing hooded tops, preventing any ‘mosh shenanigans’, threatening people for the most trivial of things, and generally bringing everyone down. Wankers. The show had some great moments, but the magic of the early Godless shows simply wasn’t there. The venue closed down shortly afterwards.

“I decided that I wouldn’t do another ‘Godless’ unless I found the right venue in the right location, with good people to work with, and would let me put Godless on a Saturday. I thought that it was unlikely I would find such a place. Fortunately, thanks to Darren from Junction15, I discovered the George Hotel, which is an awesome venue. Game on.” (Dan Peach)

“On May 1st, (Labour day here in Sweden) we entered Fascination Street Studio to start recording our seventh full-length album. We have 10 killer songs, some classic Amon Amarth tunes, some really epic moments and some of the most brutal stuff we’ve ever written! We are confident that this will be our best and most diverse album to date!
Jens Bogren will be producing the album, he produced ‘With Oden On Our Side’. We’re looking forward to yet another successful collaboration.
We’ll barricade ourselves for the next month and a half. The album will be recorded in the traditional way, starting with drums, followed by guitars, bass, and vocals.
There are plans for some cool guest appearance but nothing we can reveal just yet.
We will try our best to keep you updated with blogs, photos and a studio diary. Provided that we can tear ourselves away from the PS3, Wii and of course… a healthy serving of Swedish vodka.

We’re pleased to announce that we’ll be appearing for the first time at this year’s Download festival. We are scheduled to play second stage on Saturday, June 14th.
Since we’re already on British soil, we figure that we might as well do some further pillaging. We will be making an appearance at Metal Hammer’s Golden Gods Award show on June 16.”

If you can imagine the crispness of the “Grind Bastard” album with the ferocity of ANAAL NATHRAKH on a disc then you will get the idea of what is to come. A lot of beer, football, hospitals, pubs, curries, kebabs, kitkats and crisps went into the making of ‘Killing Music’! Originally formed back in February 1989 around the line-up of Paul Adams (bass), Peter Rew (guitars), Darren Brookes (guitars) and Mark “Barney” Greenway, who later became a vocalist with Napalm Death, Birmingham based BENEDICTION draw the interest of NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS with their first demo The Dreams You Dread, which was released the same year. Their first album, Subconscious Terror saw its’ release in 1990, followed by the departure of Barney, joining Napalm Death. The crashing debut was received well and a new vocalist, Dave Ingram was found soon. The band worked hard to escape the ghost of Greenway and during the ensuring extensive touring schedule
1991 saw the band back out with Bolt Thrower and Nocturnus and here Ingram really shows his metal, so much that the ghost of Greenway was condemned to death at a stroke. The band completed work on their second album, The Grand Leveller and the difference in the writing was a revelation, attracting international acclaim throughout the Death Metal Market.

Having already completed one European tour with Massacra during the year between the recording and the mixing of the album, the band now took to the road again with Dismember. After that tour Paul Adams departed, fed up with the road, work, the band, it was yet another kick in the teeth for this UK band. Seemingly undeterred though, the band was back in studio in December 1991 with Darren playing bass on a new EP, Dark Is The Season, which included a punishing cover of the old Anvil stalwart Forged In Fire, and January 1992 saw the band back in Europe again with Asphyx and Bolt Thrower. Dark Is The Season was yet another big success that proved that perseverance is still a virtue to be admired in today’s cut and thrust business.

Later that year they found their new bassist, Frank Healy, at that time with Cerebral Fix. Frank joined BENDICTION as a full time member just as they whisked off to Israel and a heaving Tel Aviv was his initiation.

In 1993 BENEDICTION unleashed their massive Transcend The Rubicon upon mankind. The album’s release was followed by the extensive World Violation tour with Cemetery and Atheist throughout Europe, USA, Canada and again Israel. After that tour, Ian Treacy left the band due to mounting personal differences. After The Grotesque - Ashen Epitaph EP, which featured two brand new songs and three crushing live tracks Neil Hutton, an 18-year-old drumming wonder, replaced him on a permanent basis. He had his initiation on the 11 dates of the NUCLEAR BLAST NEW YEARS FESTIVALS, which took place in January 1995 and saw BENEDICTION’S awesome live performances on German, Dutch, Austrian, Swiss and Czech stages. Meanwhile the band has already put the finishing touches to their fourth full length album The Dreams You Dread. Yet another massive impact on the worldwide metal scene followed by even more skull crushing live shows.

BENEDICTION formed a close relationship with Death, touring extensively with them at Chuck Shuldiners request.
Chuck is just one of many musicians who have infinite respect for BENEDICTIONS ‘no-shit’ approach and dedication to their genre
Their next album ‘Grind Bastard’ was launched with yet another raging tour seeing the band break new territories in the former Eastern Block countries.
They were taken on board by TCI agency in New York who now books all of their live work and touring.

Their current album with Nuclear Blast ‘Organised Chaos’ was released in October 2001. Produced by Andy Sneap, it sees a welcome return to recording for them and of course, will be launched with more skull crushing live appearances throughout Europe.

Yet another frequent update from the FALCONER camp! The new album is entitled ‘Among Beggars And Thieves’ and will be mixed in the end of May in the Sonic Train Studios. The release date is set to the end of August. This time around FALCONER will also be shooting a video clip for the song ‘Carnival Of Disgust’. Apart from the new album 2008 will be a year off for FALCONER. The band will be a bit more active again in 2009 when they will try to do a bunch of live shows again.

Having worked so hard on their new album ‘Get Dead Or Die Trying’, the lads felt that due to the huge progression they’ve made from previous releases musically and lyrically and after frequent line-up changes that this was the only right thing to do.

These five youngsters are just as convincing as MORBID ANGEL must have been when they released their first album back in the day! ‘ Among the band’s most recognizable qualities are lead guitar player Fredrik Thordendal’s abrasive, chaotic and discordant solos, singer Jens Kidman’s vocals, which resemble manic screams and shouts, the churning, dissonant rhythm guitars and the polymetric drum beats. In a typical Meshuggah song, there are two separate rhythms present: a standard 4/4 meter and a completely different metrical subdivision played by the guitars. Oftentimes, drummer Tomas Haake plays two separate rhythms: a standard 4/4 beat with his hands while following the different metrical subdivision of the guitars with his feet. However, this is not the only arrangement used. Sometimes Haake’s cymbals will follow the steady 4/4 while his snare goes with the bass drum/guitars. Other times his snare will stay with the steady 4/4 while his cymbals follow the bass drum/guitars. Sometimes, Haake follows the guitar parts entirely (cymbals, snare, and drum) and the listener is left to follow the beat on their own. All this together creates an awkward but pulsating rhythmic pattern that works as the basis of Meshuggah’s songs.

For example, the main riff of the song “New Millennium Cyanide Christ,” from their 1998 album Chaosphere, follows the first aforementioned blueprint. Haake beats a rather slow 4/4 rhythm with his hands, while the bass drums and guitars play a repetitive 23/16 rhythm pattern on top of it. As the subdivided pattern is repeated, the pattern’s accents shift to different beats on each repetition. After repeating the 23/16 pattern five times, a shorter 13/16 pattern is played once. These patterns sum up to 128 16th notes which equals exactly 8 measures in 4/4 meter. This, however, makes it a syncope, not a polyrhythm.

An example of when Haake’s cymbals keep the steady 4/4 while his snare and bass drum follow the guitars would be the beginning of Stengah from their album Nothing up until the 1:44 mark. An example of when Haake’s snare follow the steady 4/4 (in this case, on every 3) while his cymbals and bass drum follow the guitars come right after the last example, from 1:44-2:00 also on Stengah from their album Nothing. An example of when Haake follows the guitars entirely can be found from the beginning until the 2:00 mark of the song Concatenation from their album Chaosphere.

It is also notable that the band’s songs rarely follow a verse-chorus structure. There is little repeating of lyrics and the lyrical passages can be considered very long verses or stanzas.

The band has evolved through a number of stylistic periods. Contradictions Collapse has a sound similar to Metallica’s concurrent albums. None is embracing a more complex approach that would lay the grounds for their later style. Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere have a more distinct, off-time influence along with the thrash metal sound. Nothing and Catch Thirtythree have a sound close to the vein of groove metal, consisting of droning and slow grooves.

While live drums were obviously not abandoned, an unusual decision was made to use programmed drum patterns using Toontrack’s “Drumkit from Hell Superior” (developed in co-operation with Tomas Haake and Morgan Ågren) sample library on their album, Catch Thirtythree, not only providing a more precise and mechanized drumscape, but also making drum beat creativity a more collaborative effort amongst all of the band members. It cemented the album as one of the band’s most complex works to date. The band members have, however, stated in several interviews that the decision to use programmed drums was due to the lack of time given by their label to produce the record.
On their latest records (I, Catch Thirtythree, the re-release of Nothing, and obZen), guitarists Thordendal and Hagström use custom-made Nevborn, and custom Ibanez eight string guitars. These guitars add two low strings to allow the crushing, heavy riffs to be played in even lower registers. They currently use Line 6’s Vetta II Amps.

The mighty DRAGONFORCE are set for a UK tour this September. The tour will follow the release of their as-yet-untitled new album, which is pencilled to hit stores on 25th August.

The band are currently hard at work completing the new album, before they heading Stateside in late June for the start of the inaugural Rockstar Mayhem touring festival. The package kicks off in early July and is headlined by labelmates, Slipknot and sees Dragonforce bagging a main stage slot. Meanwhile, DRAGONFORCE’s last album, ‘Inhuman Rampage’ is still romping out of stores on both sides of the pond, thanks in part to the inclusion of lead track, ‘Through The Fire And Flames’ as the ‘advanced’ level on the top-selling Guitar Hero III computer game.

The Brazilian metal brothers Max and Iggor Cavalera recently released ‘Inflikted’, their first new music together in over 12 years. The album is the first outing since they recorded Sepultura’s colossal landmark album, ‘Roots’ in 1995 (which debuted at No.4 in the UK album charts). Their new project, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, features Max on vocals & rhythm guitar and Iggor on drums as well as Soulfly guitarist Marc Rizzo and Gojira’s Joe Duplantier on bass. Rex Brown (Down, Pantera) also makes a cameo bass appearance on one track.

This long-anticipated reunion between the Cavalera brothers is something fans across the globe have been waiting for since Sepultura’s last gig at Brixton Academy in December 1996. Hailing from Belo Horizonte in central Brazil, Sepultura gained a legendary reputation as the one of the most highly regarded and successful thrash metal bands of all time, with two gold albums under their belts both in the UK and the USA – ‘Chaos A.D’ (1994) and ‘Roots’ (1996). “When Iggor and I met at the 10th Annual D-Low Memorial Show and got the instruments in our hands, it was like we had never been separated. The metal was flowing in our veins,” comments Max. Making an album together was the next step and doing just a short run of European summer shows was perfect timing.

Among the band’s most recognizable qualities are lead guitar player Fredrik Thordendal’s abrasive, chaotic and discordant solos, singer Jens Kidman’s vocals, which resemble manic screams and shouts, the churning, dissonant rhythm guitars and the polymetric drum beats. In a typical Meshuggah song, there are two separate rhythms present: a standard 4/4 meter and a completely different metrical subdivision played by the guitars. Oftentimes, drummer Tomas Haake plays two separate rhythms: a standard 4/4 beat with his hands while following the different metrical subdivision of the guitars with his feet. However, this is not the only arrangement used. Sometimes Haake’s cymbals will follow the steady 4/4 while his snare goes with the bass drum/guitars. Other times his snare will stay with the steady 4/4 while his cymbals follow the bass drum/guitars. Sometimes, Haake follows the guitar parts entirely (cymbals, snare, and drum) and the listener is left to follow the beat on their own. All this together creates an awkward but pulsating rhythmic pattern that works as the basis of Meshuggah’s songs.
